چکیده

For the European x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) a split-and-delay unit (SDU) based on geometrical wavefront beam splitting and multilayer mirrors is built which covers the range of photon energies from 5 keV up to 20 keV. Maximum delays between ∆τ ± 2.5 ps at hν=20 keV and up to ∆τ ± 23 ps at hν=5keV will be possible. Time-dependent wave-optics simulations have been performed by means of Synchrotron Radiation Workshop (SRW) software for XFEL pulses at hν=5keV. The XFEL radiation was simulated using results of time-dependent simulations applying the SASE code FAST. Main features of the optical layout, including diffraction on the beam splitter edge and optics imperfections measured with a NOM slope measuring profiler were taken into account. The impact of these effects on the characterization of the temporal properties of XFEL pulses are analyzed. An approach based on Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) allows for the evaluation of the temporal coherence despite of large wavefront distortions caused by the optics imperfections. In this way, the fringes resulting from time-dependent two-beam interference can be filtered and evaluated yielding a coherence time of τc=0.187 fs (HWHM) for real, non-perfect mirrors, while for ideal mirrors a coherence time of τc=0.191 fs (HWHM) is expected. Characterization of temporal coherence of hard X-ray free-electron laser pulses with single-shot interferograms

Temporal coherence is one of the most fundamental characteristics of light, connecting to spectral information through the Fourier transform relationship between time and frequency. Interferometers with a variable path-length difference (PLD) between the two branches have widely been employed to characterize temporal coherence properties for broad spectral regimes. Hard X-ray interferometers re...

Performance of a hard X-ray split-and-delay optical system with a wavefront division

The performance of a hard X-ray split-and-delay optical (SDO) system with a wavefront division scheme was investigated at the hard X-ray free-electron laser facility SACLA. For the wavefront division, beam splitters made of edge-polished perfect Si(220) crystals were employed. We characterized the beam properties of the SDO system, and investigated its capabilities for beam manipulation and dia...

Coherence properties of hard x-ray synchrotron sources and x-ray free-electron lasers

A general theoretical approach based on the results of statistical optics is used for the analysis of the transverse coherence properties of third generation hard x-ray synchrotron sources and x-ray free-electron lasers (XFEL). Correlation properties of the wavefields are calculated at different distances from an equivalent Gaussian Schell-model source. This model is used to describe coherence ...

WavePropaGator: interactive framework for X-ray free-electron laser optics design and simulations1

This article describes the WavePropaGator (WPG) package, a new interactive software framework for coherent and partially coherent X-ray wavefront propagation simulations. The package has been developed at European XFEL for users at the existing and emerging free-electron laser (FEL) facilities, as well as at the third-generation synchrotron sources and future diffraction-limited storage rings. ...

A split-beam probe-pump-probe scheme for femtosecond time resolved protein X-ray crystallography

In order to exploit the femtosecond pulse duration of X-ray Free-Electron Lasers (XFEL) operating in the hard X-ray regime for ultrafast time-resolved protein crystallography experiments, critical parameters that determine the crystallographic signal-to-noise (I/σI) must be addressed. For single-crystal studies under low absorbed dose conditions, it has been shown that the intrinsic pulse inten...
